Empowering Women: Because Breast Health Matters

Share

Maintaining breast health involves a combination of regular screenings, healthy lifestyle choices, and awareness of personal breast changes. By staying educated and proactive, women can take control of their breast health and increase their overall quality of life. For personalized care, individuals should consult with a healthcare provider who can offer recommendations based on an individual’s health profile and family history.

Breast exams are an important part of maintaining breast health. They can help
detect any unusual changes that require further evaluation. There are two main types of breast exams:

1. Self-Breast Exams: Performing regular self-breast exams can help you become familiar with the normal feel and look of your breasts. You should check for any lumps, changes in size or shape, or any unusual discharge from the nipples. It’s generally recommended to do a self-breast exam once a month, a few days after your period ends, or on a consistent date each month.
2. Clinical Breast Exams: These are performed by a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or nurse. They typically involve a physical examination of your breasts and underarm areas to check for any abnormalities. Clinical breast exams are often done during routine physical exams or annual check-ups.

In addition to these exams, mammograms are commonly used for breast screenings, especially in women 40 or over and those who are at high risk of breast cancer.
This is why, with the help of a grant and TriState Health Foundation, TriState Women’s Imaging purchased a brand new 3D mammography unit equipped with curved paddles. 3D mammography is more sensitive than traditional 2D mammography in the early detection of breast cancer. The three-dimensional approach provides a more comprehensive view of breast tissue, allowing the radiologist to detect abnormalities with greater accuracy. This can be particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue.

At TriState Health, we understand the critical importance of preventative care, including mammograms. Our women’s imaging department is removing barriers many women receive in timely breast cancer screening by offering self-referral mammograms. Call 509.758.4658 to schedule your appointment today!
