Practicing Smart Food Safety This Summer
Share
Summer is the season of picnics, barbecues, and backyard gatherings—but rising temperatures also bring a higher risk of foodborne illness. Warm weather creates ideal conditions for bacteria to grow, especially when food is left out too long or handled improperly. Practicing good food safety habits is key to keeping your summer meals safe and enjoyable.
Why Summer Food Safety Matters
Foodborne illnesses peak in the summer due to a combination of heat and outdoor eating. When perishable foods are exposed to temperatures between 40°F and 135°F—often called the “danger zone”—bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria can multiply quickly.
Whether you’re grilling in the backyard or packing a picnic, knowing how to store, prepare, and serve food safely helps protect you and your family from unnecessary health risks.
1: Keep Cold Foods Cold
- Use insulated coolers with plenty of ice or ice packs.
- Store raw meat separately from ready-to-eat items.
- Keep coolers in the shade and avoid opening them too often.
2. Cook Meats to Safe Temperatures
Use a food thermometer to ensure:
- Poultry: 165°F
- Ground beef: 155°F
- Steaks, pork, and fish: 145°F
Avoid guessing—color is not a reliable indicator of doneness.
3. Don't Let Food Sit Out
- Never leave perishable foods out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if it’s over 90°F outside.
- Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers so they cool evenly.
4. Wash Hands and Surfaces Often
- Wash your hands before and after handling food—especially raw meat.
- Keep cutting boards, utensils, and counters clean and sanitized.
5. Watch for Cross-Comtamination
- Use separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked meats.
- Never reuse marinades that have touched raw meat unless you boil them first.
The Bottom Line: Think Ahead, Stay Safe
Whether you’re hosting a party or heading out to the lake, planning ahead makes food safety simple. Pack a thermometer, wash produce ahead of time, and keep an eye on the clock to minimize risk and maximize fun.
