Investing in the Future Through Local Student Programs

As a community-owned hospital, TriState Health is deeply committed to serving the needs of our region, not just today, but for generations to come. A key part of that commitment is investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals. Through hands-on programs like Scrubs Camp and the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program, local high school students are discovering the many opportunities available in healthcare, gaining real-world experience, and laying the foundation for rewarding careers in the medical field.

In its first year, Scrubs Camp launched in partnership with Clarkston High School, offering students an inside look at the fast-paced and diverse world of healthcare. Through interactive workshops, job-shadowing experiences, and direct mentorship from TriState Health professionals, students explored careers in nursing, radiology, surgical services, and more. The enthusiasm and interest generated by the program led to its rapid expansion to include students from Asotin High School as well.

“We created Scrubs Camp to spark curiosity and open doors for students who might not have otherwise considered a future in healthcare,” says Jordan Stover, Senior Recruiter at TriState Health. “Watching them engage with our team, ask questions, and see their excitement grow has been incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about career exploration, it’s about planting seeds for something bigger.”

While Scrubs Camp provides a broad overview of healthcare careers, the TriState Health CNA Program, in partnership with Walla Walla Community College, offers a more focused and immersive pathway into the profession. What began with just five students in year one quickly grew in popularity, almost doubling, enrolling 9 students the following year.

Through this program, students earn their CNA certification, having received classroom instruction, practical training, and clinical experience from TriState educators. Upon completion, many graduates are qualified for immediate employment, or are inspired to pursue further education in healthcare.

“Working with our high school students provides me with great joy and hope for the future of healthcare in our community,” says Shawn Neilson, TriState Health Clinical Nurse Educator. “Our partnership with Clarkston High School and Walla Walla Community College is helping to create a sustainable pipeline of caregivers who are committed to making a difference.”

TriState Health’s support doesn’t end once students graduate from high school. The TriState Healthcare Scholarship, currently accepting applications, offers financial assistance to students pursuing a degree or certification in a healthcare-related field. Whether recipients are attending a four-year university, community college, or vocational program, this scholarship helps remove financial barriers and allows students to stay focused on their goals.

“Receiving the nursing scholarship from TriState was greatly appreciated,” says Melanie Gianopulos, TriState Esthetician at Aquavia Aesthetics, and 2024 scholarship recipient. “It made me feel truly supported as a TriState employee to pursue my degree in nursing and I value that they offer these kind of opportunities. With fewer financial worries regarding my tuition, I’m able to focus on my education. It’s very encouraging to know that I work for a hospital that promotes furthering one’s education!”

These initiatives are more than just educational opportunities—they are a proactive solution to the ongoing workforce challenges facing rural healthcare. By cultivating local talent and creating clear, supported pathways into the field, TriState is helping ensure that our region is cared for by professionals who are not only highly skilled, but also deeply connected to the communities they serve.

From classroom to career, TriState Health is honored to support aspiring medical leaders by providing the tools, resources, and encouragement they need to thrive. By fostering local talent and investing in innovative programs, we are not only addressing current workforce challenges but also building a healthier future for our community. Together, we are creating a better state of health.
