What is Chronic Pain?
While acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself, chronic pain is different. There may have been an initial mishap — sprained back, severe infection, or an ongoing cause of pain — arthritis, cancer, and ear infection. Still, some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Many chronic pain conditions affect older adults. Common chronic pain complaints include headaches, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, and neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or the central nervous system itself).
- Acute and chronic back, leg, neck, and upper arm pain
- Acute shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia
- Cancer pain
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
- Disc herniation(s)
- Nerve pain
- Spinal stenosis
- Vertebral body compression fracture(s)
- Epidural steroid injections
- Intrathecal pump implantation
- Joint injections
- Minimally invasive spine surgery
- Neuroablative procedures
- Spinal cord stimulation (both the trials and permanent implants)
- Sympathetic blocks
