Family Medicine Residency Program

TriState Health is partnering with the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University to launch a Family Medicine Residency Program dedicated to training the next generation of rural physicians. This program will offer hands-on, community-based experience to medical residents while helping to address the severe physician shortage facing Eastern Washington and the surrounding region. Through this partnership, TriState aims to strengthen access to primary care and ensure families continue to receive high-quality healthcare close to home.

Why Give?

Across rural America, access to healthcare is shrinking. Eastern Washington has just 183 physicians per 100,000 people, among the lowest ratios in the nation. By investing in the TriState Family Medicine Residency Program, you are helping to train and retain local doctors who will serve this region for decades to come.

Your gift supports the facilities, training, and resources needed to bring this vision to life—ensuring our friends, neighbors, and families have access to quality care without leaving their community. Together, we can build a healthier future for generations to come.

Benefits of a family medicine Residency Program

Improved access to care: More local physicians mean shorter wait times and better health outcomes.

Healthier communities: Preventive care and early intervention reduce chronic disease and hospital visits.

Economic growth: A strong healthcare workforce supports local employers, creates new jobs, and contributes to community vitality.

Generational change: 60% of residents remain within 100 miles of where they train—keeping skilled providers close to home.

“This program allows residents to train in real clinical settings where they learn the full spectrum of family medicine. Residents will have the chance to learn preventative care, chronic disease management, inpatient care, and more, all while forming roots in a rural community.”

Access to primary care shouldn’t depend on where you live. Yet in our region, too many people go without a regular doctor. In 2024, nearly 1 in 5 patients visiting TriState’s Emergency Department and 16% of Minor Care patients did not have a primary care provider—most of them working adults with health insurance.

These individuals often seek care only when illness or injury becomes urgent. By that point, conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illness are harder—and more expensive—to treat. A strong connection with a family physician can change that story.

The TriState Family Medicine Residency Program will help ensure more people in our community—especially young adults and working families—can establish lasting relationships with local physicians who know them, their families, and their needs. Early access to preventive care means healthier lives, fewer emergency visits, and lower healthcare costs across the region.

Your support makes this possible. Together, we can make sure every patient in our community has access to quality, compassionate care—right here at home.
